Police Arrest ASP Over Death of Delta Suspect

An Assistant Superintendent of Police in Delta State has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun. The officer has been transferred to Abuja for disciplinary action as police authorities promise justice and reaffirm their zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial killings.

Authorities in Delta State have taken into custody an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Usman Nuhu, following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.

The incident, said to have happened on Sunday, gained widespread attention after a video circulated online showing the victim being held down before the shooting occurred.

According to the Delta State Police Command, the officer involved has been arrested and moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where internal disciplinary procedures are expected to begin.

Speaking on the matter, the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the case had been escalated for further action.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, explained that the deceased was intercepted at Benin Motor Park on the Warri–Sapele Expressway after transport union members reportedly found him attempting to send a package containing a firearm.

Initial findings revealed that the parcel allegedly contained a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition, prompting union members to detain him and alert security operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command.

Police officers reportedly arrived at the scene to take over the matter and place the suspect under lawful custody. However, during the process, ASP Usman Nuhu allegedly discharged his service weapon, an action said to be against established police procedures.

The gunshot resulted in the death of the suspect, leading to immediate concern and public reaction.
